Regarding the club culture history, a new documentary that tells the story of Berlin’s beloved, sex-positive club KitKat is going to be released next year 2023. The film tells the story of the venue, its crowd and its owner, Kirsten Krüger.
After receiving €100,000 in funding, the film is slated for a 2023 release. KitKat, which first opened in 1994, is currently situated next to Heinrich-Heine-Straße U-Bahn station.
KitKatClub – Das Leben ist ein Zirkus (which translates to “KitKatClub – Life Is A Circus”) was filmed while the club was closed during the pandemic and running instead as a Covid-19 testing centre, Groove reports. The director, Philipp Fussenegger, who is also a regular visitor to KitKat, focused on the crowd and their stories. The title is taken from a sign in the garden.
“The film started for me as a tribute to the legendary club,” said Fussenegger, “but [it] is increasingly becoming a film about the unique people behind it, above all of course [the owner] Kirsten [Krüger], who I have come to know and appreciate over the years as the woman who holds everything together.”
