Ilona Maras delivers an impressive debut on Frankyeffe‘s Riot Recordings with a driving two-track techno EP titled, Intention Energy. The release centres around raw percussion and old-school synth sounds that have been sequenced into fast-paced grooves.
This might be the first time that Ilona Maras has featured on Riot Recordings, but the Montenegrin artist has already featured on other influential record labels including Reinier Zonneveld’s Filth on Acid.
Although she was born in Montenegro, Ilona Maras is currently located in Switzerland where she is a respected DJ within Zürich’s underground club scene. The groove and flow of the dynamic tracks on this release showcase her knowledge of what works on a dance floor, as both tracks are oozing with energy.
“Intention Energy” is first of the two tracks, and it has rising synth stabs that are overlayered with fizzing ride cymbals and intense clap rhythms. Its focal point is a vocal sample saying “on the street and I’m thirsty” which adds to the gritty aesthetic of its peak time groove.
“Am I Doing Right” completes the package with crunching claps and dramatic snare bursts powering acid synths and intense chord stabs. Offbeat vocal snippets add an uplifting element to the brutality of the track’s commanding groove.
